Statement from Komen NENY on the Recent Grants Criteria Issue

Komen Northeastern New York Affiliate has never and will never choose a side in a political debate unrelated to our cause. Komen Northeastern New York exists to meet a singular mission - to end breast cancer forever. It is our intent to administer a Community Grants Program that meets the breast health needs of women and men in our local community, to create greater access, and to ensure quality care. As such, we wholeheartedly support Komen National's decision to reverse controversial grants language. This enables Komen Northeastern New York to make granting decisions to ensure they best serve the needs of our local population.

We sincerely apologize to our loyal volunteers, Race participants, donors, sponsors, and community partners for the confusion and distraction from our mission during the past few days.

The Northeastern New York Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure serves 11 counties in New York and since 1995 has distributed more than $2.4 million in local grant funds to over 40 organizations across our service area. We are currently reviewing grants applications for our 2012-13 Community Grants cycle. We look forward to supporting community nonprofit organizations for their worthy projects that support regional breast health funding priorities.

Community Grant funds are raised right here in Northeastern New York, largely through the efforts of our annual Race for the Cure event. Without the dollars raised at this event, there are no funds to distribute. Breast cancer is an indiscriminate killer of mothers, sisters, daughters, and friends. We hope we can count on the support of our community so that we can continue to deliver on our important mission of providing breast health programming to the women and men of Northeastern New York.
