These projects have been selected by our independent Grant Review Panel as those that will have the greatest impact in serving uninsured or underinsured women in our service area. Please note that Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is not a direct service provider.

List of 2012 Current Community Grant Recipients

Twelve local organizations involved in the fight against breast cancer can serve more people and save more lives thanks to $303,937 in grants awarded by the Northeastern New York Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.

A Request for Applications with priorities from our 2011 Community Profile was distributed in September of 2011. The grant applications received were reviewed, rated and ranked by an independent review panel made up of breast cancer survivors and health care professionals and then approved for funding by the Komen Northeastern New York Affiliate Board. Komen Northeastern New York awards grants to the following programs:

Albany County

American Cancer Society HopeClub-HopeClub On The Go (HCOTG) Expansion Albany / Rensselaer Counties-$15,000-Treatment Support, Survivorship, Education-Expanding HCOTG programing to African-American women in Rensselaer County urban communities, as well as creating a network of trained volunteer community mobilizer/ambassadors to provide breast health education and cancer support services in both Albany and Rensselaer Counties.

Capital Region Action Against Breast Cancer!-CRAAB! Cares-$29,923-Survivorship, Education, Treatment Support-Provide awareness programs for African American, Hispanic women and young people.  Provide exercise and support services for women who have been diagnosed to enhance their survivorships and reduce their risk for recurrence.

Camp Bravehearts, Inc.-Oncology Camp for Women-$30,000-Survivorship, Education-Enables women living with breast cancer an opportunity to share life experiences with others in similar circumstances through weekend retreats, one-day program and events; targets women who are underserved, minorities, young and residents of rural counties with high incidence or mortality rates of breast cancer. 

Montgomery County

To Life!-Breast Health Awareness & Education in Vulnerable Populations-$30,000-Education, Health Care Delivery/Systems Change-To reduce health care barriers in minority populations and promote breast health and community resources awareness, including an emergency financial assistance program.

American Cancer Society HopeClub-HopeClub On The Go (HCOTG) Expansion Schenectady / Montgomery Counties-$15,000-Treatment Support, Survivorship, Health Care Delivery/SystemChange, Education-Expanding HCOTG programing to African-American women in Schenectady and Hispanic/Latino women in Montgomery counties; as well as create a network of trained volunteer community mobilizer/ambassadors to provide breast health education and cancer support services in both counties.

Schenectady County

Peaceful Acres Horses, Inc.-Women’s Retreat Program-$30,000-Survivorship, Treatment Support- Will conduct two weekend retreats for breast cancer patients and survivors to help heal emotionally, physically, socially, spiritually and psychologically.

YWCA of Schenectady-Encore: Take Charge of Your Heath-$30,000-Education-Targets minority women residing in Schenectady County for breast health services that are medically underinsured or uninsured and have low incomes.

Clinton County

Planned Parenthood of the North Country New York, INC-New Media and Traditional Education for Breast Self Awareness-$16,139-Education-Use  a combination of new media and traditional education and outreach methods to reach young women in Clinton and Franklin Counties with messages about the importance of breast self-awareness and breast cancer screening.

Community Link Mobile Health-Women’s Health Screening-$25,000-Education, Screening-To reduce barriers to breast screening and education using mobile education, clinical breast exans and referrals for mammograms for women with no-insurance and/or low income in rural Northern New York.

Essex County

Creative Healing Retreats, Inc.-Adirondack Healing Retreats-$12,224-Survivorship-To provide retreats to women living with breast cancer to give them a safe environment where they can decrease their social isolation and improve their lives after this trauma through learning skills for taking control of their sense of well-being and connecting with peers.

Rensselaer County

Samaritan Hospital-One Women a Day-$30,000-Education, Screening-An outreach program targeting African American women and young women in Rensselaer for breast health services.

Warren County

C.R. Wood Cancer Center at Glens Falls Hospital-The Glens Falls Hospital Regional Breast Care Initiative-$29,000-Education, Treatment, Treatment Support-Provide evidence based breast health awareness education and life style risk reduction strategies to young women and provide co-pay and financial assistance.

Small grants for educational projects and scientific conferences were also reviewed throughout the past year and approved for funding by the Affiliate Board. Komen Northeastern New York awarded small grants to the following programs:

Creative Healing Connections- $4,201-Education Grant-Funding for various educational materials and supplies for this organization that serves women with cancer.

The Breast Center at Glens Fall Hospital-$1,000-Travel Grant-To cover the cost of attending the “Establishing a Comprehensive Breast Center of Excellence”conference in Boston in October of 2011. This knowledge will help ensure the highest quality of care to all patients within their community.

CRAAB!-$5,000-Education Grant-Funding will produce three editions of education cards that include up to date information about breast cancer that will reach 5,000 residents in the counties of Albany, Rensselaer, and Fulton-Montgomery.

TruJoy Inc.-$1,450-Education Grant-Funding to “Train the Educator” to increase breast health awareness in the community.
