Focus on Grantees:

To Life! is using Komen NENY grant funding to hire and train a beast health mentor in the Hispanic community in Amsterdam with Centro Civico. Primary goals are to familiarize herself with community resources that could provide assistance to her client base, recruit women to the program, and implement breast health workshops in the county. The mentor educates women on breast health matters, addresses other wellness areas to decrease breast cancer risk-factors, assists with scheduling and retaining appointments, transportation, and links uninsured/low-income women with free services to maintain their health and receive proper screening. The project also funds emergency needs of clients related to breast health. The mentor has also partnered with the Cancer Services Program of Fulton & Montgomery County, and has arranged for a mobile screening event to provide free mammography to eligible women.

With funding from Komen NENY, the Capital Region Action Against Breast Cancer!, among other programs, has organized two 8 week sessions of yoga and meditation classes for breast cancer survivors in Amsterdam and in Schenectady County; offered medical massage to area breast cancer survivors in their home; and offered a 12 week transitions class to breast cancer survivors--a course of nutrition counseling and weight management through low-glycemic eating, low impact exercises to improve body composition; and tips for reducing stress.
