Nathan Littauer is using their grant to increase accessibility to, and participation in, clinical breast exams and mammography by women over 40 years of age in Hamilton County. They offer clinical breast exams at the Speculator, Mayfield & Gloversville facilities to their 900+ patients over 40, living in Hamilton County. Mammography services are also available at the Gloversville facility. Transportation services are available from Hamilton County to the Gloversville facility and back on a monthly basis for any women over 40 seeking breast screening services. Breast health education is provided through HealthLink. The goal is to promote a measurable increase in breast exams by increasing ease of access, providing transportation services and engaging in educational programs.
The Comprehensive Breast Cancer Rehabilitation Services plan for Sunnyview Hospital seeks to address the needs of patients living with physical complications including decreased motion/strength/endurance and increased pain or swelling as a result of treatment for breast cancer. The program provides services to individuals by providing bandaging supplies and garments for those with lymphedema, an Aqua Lymphatic Therapy program, Pink Ribbon Pilates Program, and having therapists trained in advanced rehabilitation principles for patients with breast cancer with a concentrated effort to inform the African American population who reside in Schenectady County about their program and services. Sunnyview also will evaluate the effectiveness of the Breast Cancer Rehabilitation program by tracking attendance at community presentations and gathering feedback from patients utilizing patient surveys.
